Comeback Cows Extend Win Streak To Seven

Fremont, Nebraska - In front of a capacity crowd at Historic Moller Field Friday night, The Fremont Moo spotted the Nebraska Prospects six runs over the first three innings. However, Fremont scored nine of their own over the last five frames and defeated the Nebraska Prospects 9-8, in Independence League Baseball Association action.


Midland University product Zach Vincent started on the mound for The Moo, but had a shaky outing. With one out in the top of the first, Luke Bies and Nathan Vermass drew back-to-back walks off Vincent. Then, Brice Wallar hit a two-rbi double to left, scoring Bies and Veermass to put the Prospects up 2-0. Two Vincent wild pitches scored Wallar, while Ashton Graff-Rowe and Drew Borner drew back-to-back walks. A fourth walk of the inning and another wild pitch by Vincent, his fourth in the opening inning, scored a pair of runs to make it a 4-0 Prospects lead.


The visitors added two more runs in the top of the third. Nathan Vermass led off the inning by reaching on a throwing error from Hunter Snyder at shortstop. Then, Brice Wallar added to his hot offensive start by hitting a Vincent 0-1 pitch over the left field fence for a two-run home run, making it 6-0, The Prospects.


Fremont finally got its offense going in the bottom of the fourth. Against reliever Carson Obrecht, Isaac Bonner doubled, with two outs. Then, Trey Brooks was hit by a pitch. Dylan Brandenburg drew a walk to load the bases before Josh Blount drew a free pass, bringing home Bonner, to make it 6-1. The next batter, Bridger Coleman, hit an Obrecht 0-1 pitch over the "Moller Monster" for a grand slam home run, to make the score 6-5.


In the bottom of the fifth, Fremont grabbed its first lead of the game. Tyrus Petsche led off with a triple to the right-center field wall Two batters later, Miles Meadows hit an rbi single, scoring Petsche, to tie the game at 6-6. The Prospects went to the bullpen and brought in reliever Kyler Hanson. The next batter, Isaac Bonner, hit a popup to shallow left which was caught by Prospects shortstop Ashton Graff-Rowe. On the play, Miles Meadows tagged and scored, to put Fremont ahead, 7-6.


The Prospects tied the game in the top of the seventh. Against Fremont reliever Connor Petersen, Paul Schuyler led off the inning with a single, then stole second. Luke Bies singled to put runners on the corners, then Bies stole second. The next batter, Nathan Vermass hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Schuyler, to tie the game at 7-7.


It didn't take long for Fremont to recapture the lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Isaac Bonner singled with one out. Then, Bonner was forced out at second on Trey Brooks grounder to second base. Dylan Brandenburg and Josh Blount drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. The Prospects brought in Tyler Palmer to pitch. On the first pitch he threw, he hit Bridger Coleman, bringing home Brooks to make it an 8-7 Fremont lead.


The Moo added what turned out to be needed insurance in the bottom of the eighth. Collin Pitts drilled a Palmer pitch over the left field fence for his first home run of the year, putting Fremont up 9-7.


The Prospects did not go away quietly. In the top of the ninth against Fremont reliever Theo Hughes, Luke Bies grounded to shortstop and reached on a throwing error by Stephan Espinoza. Two batters later, Brice Wallar added to his big night with an rbi single, scoring Bies, to make it 9-8. However, Hughes finished up the game striking out Ashton Graff-Rowe and leaving the Historic Moller Field crowd of approximately 1,000 happy and ready to watch the post-game fireworks show.


Fremont (18-11, 5-0) scored nine runs off nine hits, but committed four errors. The Prospects (5-12, 0-2) had eight runs with six hits and no errors.


Moo starter Zach Vincent pitched 4.0 innings, giving up five earned runs off three hits, struck out four, walked six, had four wild pitches and gave up a home run. Connor Petersen (1-0) earned the win in relief. He pitched 4.0 innings, giving up one run off two hits and struck out two. Theo Hughes (2) picked up the save. He pitched 1.0 inning, giving up one unearned run off one hit and struck out one.


Prospects starter Cooper Katskee pitched 2.0 innings. The reliever at the University of Indiana gave up two hits, struck out four and walked two. Carson Obrecht pitched 2.1 innings, giving up seven runs off four hits, struck out two, walked two, had one wild pitch, hit one batter and gave up one home run. Kyler Hansen (1-1) took the loss. He pitched 2.1 innings, giving up one run off two hits, struck out four, walked four and had one wild pitch. Tyler Palmer pitched 1.1 innings, giving up one run off one hit, struck out one and yielded a home run.


Offensively for Fremont, Bridger Coleman was 2-for-2 with a grand slam home run and five rbi's. Collin Pitts was 1-for-2 with a solo home run. Miles Meadows was 1-for-5 and drove in one run. Isaac Bonner was 2-for-5 with an rbi.


For The Prospects, Nathan Vermass was 0-for-4 with an rbi. Brice Wallar was 3-for-5 with a two-run home run and five runs batted in.


The Prospects have dropped five straight games and head to Spearfish to open a series versus the Sasquatch on Monday Fremont has won its seventh straight game and will begin a much anticipated two game series versus the Casper Spuds, Saturday night, at 7:05 p.m, at Historic Moller Field.


More Information: Saturday's game is "Salute To Service Saturday". The Moo players will wear a special Stars and Stripes jersey, presented by The Fremont Area Sports Coalition.
