Spearfish, South Dakota- The Fremont Moo held off the Spearfish Sasquatch, 9-7, Wednesday night at Black Hills Energy Stadium. Fremont has won the first two games of the three game series and will attempt for a sweep, Thursday night. With the win, Fremont has won three straight and hit the 30-win barrier for the season.
Just like Tuesday night, Fremont scored in the first three innings, Wednesday. Neil Jansen got hit by a pitch from Spearfish starter Jack Sutton, with one out in the first. Then, Tyman Long reached on an error by Sasquatch third baseman Chazz Crook. The next batter, Tyler Harrington, grounded out to short, scoring Janesen, to make it 1-0. Two batters later, Tyler Hummel delivered an RBI single, bringing home Long, to put Fremont up 2-0.
The Sasquatch cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first. Seth Nelson singled off Moo starter Kai Taylor. Two batters later, Joey Legg doubled to put runners at second and third. Then, Jack Nehler grounded out to short, scoring Nelson to make it 2-1.
Fremont put some room between themselves and the Sasquatch in the second. Easton Steck led off with a double and Jason Clark singled to put runners at first and third. Blake Tablazon drew a walk to load the bases. Two batters later, Tyman Long smoked the ball over the third base bag, down into the left field corner for a bases clearing double, to make it 5-1.
The Moo added on in the third. Tyler Hummel led off the inning hitting a 1-1 pitch off Sutton over the left field fence, just inside the foul pole, for his first home run of the year, to make it 6-1. Hunter Palmer singled and advanced to second on an errant pick off throw by Sutton. Easton Steck struck out, but a wild pitch and an errant throw by the catcher, Ben Seminara, allowed Palmer to score and Steck to advance to second. Two batters later, Blake Tablazon hit an RBI double, scoring Steck, to make it 8-1.
Spearfish cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Jack Nehler and Luis Reyes reached on a single and a double. Then, Dylan Richey was hit by a pitch, to load the bases. Then, Chazz Crook hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Nehler, to make it 8-2. Gage Kracht singled to drive in Reyes, to make it 8-3. With Ben Seminara at the plate, Kracht attempted to steal second, but was thrown out by Moo catcher Tyman Long. On the play, Richey scored from third, to make it 8-4.
Fremont's final run of the night came in the top of the sixth. Neil Jansen led off with a single and advanced to second and third on a pair of wild pitches. Three batters later, Connor Petersen singled to center, scoring Jansen, to make it 9-4, Fremont.
It stayed that way until the bottom of the ninth. Fremont brought in its third pitcher of the evening Jacob Ortiz, who ran into trouble. Seth Nelson and Ryan Bachman led off the inning with back-to-back walks. Joey Legg singled, driving in Nelson, to make it 9-5. Jack Nehler singled to load up the bases, then, Luis Reyes drew a bases loaded walk, scoring Bachman, to make it 9-6. Fremont went to the bullpen and brought in Darius Blasingane. He struck out Dylan Richey, looking for the first out of the inning. Then, pinch-hitter Bryson Hoier drew a bases loaded walk, to make it 9-7. With the game on the line and the winning run at first base, Blasingane got Gage Kracht to ground to Connor Petersen at shortstop, who stepped on second to force out Hoier, and threw to Jason Clark at first to retire Kracht, in a double play, to end the game.
Fremont starter Kai Taylor (1-1) earned the win. The Phoenix, Arizona native at Augustana University pitched 6.0 innings, giving up eight hits, four runs, one walk, struck out seven and hit two batters. Jagger Edwards, the San Antonio, Texas native at Columbia University, threw 2.0 innings, giving up one hit, two walks, and struck out two. Jacob Ortiz faced five batters and could not record an out. The Tucson, Arizona native from Cerro Coso Community College gave up two hits, three runs and walked three. Darius Blasingane (1) earned the save. The St. Petersburg, Florida native at Edward Waters University pitched 1.0 inning, walking one and striking out one.
Spearfish starter Jack Sutton (0-2) took the loss. He pitched 2.1 innings, giving up seven hits, four earned runs, walked two, struck out three, yielded the home run to Tyler Hummel, had two wild pitches and hit one batter. Levi Graham pitched 5.2 innings of relief. He gave up five hits, one run, walked one, struck out five and had three wild pitches. Gunner Thompson pitched 1.0 inning, walking three.
Offensively, Fremont's Blake Tablazon was 2-for-5. The Lynewoon, Washington native at Cerro Coso Community College drove in one run. Tyman Long was 1-for-5. The Sioux Falls, South Dakota native at College of Southern Nevada had three RBI's. Connor Petersen was 1-for-4. The Tucson, Arizona native at Midland University drove in one run. Tyler Hummel was 2-for-4. The Nolensville, Tennessee native at Colorado School of Mines hit his first home run of the year, in the third inning, and had two RBI's on the night. Hunter Palmer was 2-for-4. The St. Michael, Minnesota native at South Dakota State had a single and a double, and Jason Clark was 2-for-4. The Victoria, Illinois native at Knox College had a single and a double.
For Spearfish, Seth Nelson was 2-for-4. Joey Legg was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jack Nehler was 2-for-5 with a run batted in. Luis Reyes was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Chazz Crook went 0-for-3, but drove in a run. Bryson Hoier drew a bases loaded walk, bringing home a run, in the ninth inning, and Gage Kracht was 2-for-5 with an RBI.
More Information: Fremont claimed the series from the Sasquatch and will try for the sweep, Thursday night. With the win, Fremont has won three straight. Also, with the victory, Fremont has recorded 30 wins, for the second straight season.
Up Next: Fremont (30-19, 13-12) will play Spearfish (23-29, 12-15) for the final time this year, Thursday night. First pitch at Black Hills Energy Stadium will be 7:05pm (CT) / 6:05pm (MT).
