Fremont, Nebraska- The Fremont Moo scored three runs between the seventh and eighth innings and held on to defeat the Nebraska Prospects, 3-2, Sunday night at Historic Moller Field.
Scoring was hard to come by for both teams, Sunday, in an Independence League Baseball Association battle, that lasted just two hours and seventeen minutes.
The Prospects got on the board in the top of the second inning. Tucker Bradley reached on a leadoff walk and advanced to second and third on back-to-back wild pitches from Moo starter Cole Hupke. After Hupke got Tre Mungin to strikeout swinging for the first out, Danny Spongberg reached on an a walk and leadoff batter Easton Swafford did the same, to load the bases. After a strikeout of Tyler Palmer, for the second out, Colin Lynam drew a walk to bring home Bradley, and put the Prospects ahead, 1-0.
The scoring would hold until the bottom of the seventh, when the Moo finally got to Prospects starter, PJ Loucks. Ben Swails delivered a one-out triple and Sammy Contacos followed with a rbi single, scoring Swails, to tie the score at one. Contacos stole second and took third an an errant throw from the catcher, Tucker Bradley. Connor Petersen put the Moo in front with a rbi single to make it 2-1, Fremont, after seven innings.
The Prospects would tie the game, however, in the top of the eighth. Fremont's Trey Nichols, the fourth pitcher of the contest, for the Moo, came on to start the inning. Nathan Cunningham led off with a single. After a flyout by pinch-hitter Jackson Meier, to left field, pinch-hitter Britton Bond reached on a fielding error by Swails at shortstop, putting runners at the corners. Then, pinch-hitter, Sid deMayo hit a rbi double to right center, scoring Cunningham, to make it a 2-2, game. Nichols hit Spongberg on a 1-2 pitch and got Easton Swafford to ground to first. On the fielder's choice, Tyman Long threw home to force out Bond for the second out. With the bases still loaded, Nichols got Tyler Palmer to pop up to second base for the final out of the inning, keeping the score tied at two.
After giving up three unearned runs in the eighth inning of Saturday night's loss, Fremont turned the tables, Sunday. Henry Hayman reached on a fielding error by newly inserted third baseman, Braden Cannon. Cannon was stellar on the mound in relief, Saturday night to earn the win, but his error Sunday turned costly. After Hayman reached second on a wild pitch, Tyler Harrington delivered a rbi single to center, scoring Hayman to put Fremont up 3-2.
In the ninth, Nichols struck out Colin Lynam to begin the inning. Next, Joel Benes grounded out to short for the second out. Then, Nichols got Nathan Cunningham to swing and miss at a 1-2 pitch for the final out of the game.
Fremont starter Cole Hupke lasted just 1.2 innings. The Brandon, South Dakota native did not give up a hit, however, he yielded one run, walked six, struck out four, had two wild pitches and hit one batter. Moo newcomer Jagger Edwards, a native of San Antonio, Texas and player at Columbia University, worked 1.1 innings. He gave up two hits, no runs, walked one and struck out two. Another fresh face, Teron Williams, a Belton, Missouri native who is a sophomore at Bellevue University, pitched four innings and retired all twelve batters he faced, striking out four. Nichols, (2-0), pitched two innings. The Bowling Green, Missouri native and Midland University Warrior, gave up two hits, one unearned run, struck out two and hit one batter.
The Prospects starter PJ Loucks pitched 6.1 innings, giving up four hits, two runs, walked two and struck out three. Braden Curtis (0-1) pitched 1.2 innings, yielding two hits, one unearned run, walked one, struck out two and had one wild pitch.
Offensively, Tyler Harrington led the Moo, going 2-for-4 with a rbi.
More Information: With the win, Fremont claimed the rubber game of the series from the Prospects, and now lead the all-time series, 8-1. With the Badlands Big Sticks loss versus the Sawtooth Sawkeyes, Sunday, Fremont moved to within one game of the league leading Big Sticks. With Harrington's second inning single, he ran his hit streak to six games, with the Moo. Sunday was also Sunday Fun Day at Historic Moller Field, as all kids 12 and under received free admission, plus, got to run the bases and play catch with the Moo players, after the game.
Up Next: The Nebraska Prospects (6-3) will begin a three-game series at the Spearfish Sasquatch, Friday, June 9th. After an off day, Monday, Fremont (9-3) will continue its six-game homestand, by welcoming the Oahe Zap (1-10) to Historic Moller Field for the first of a three game series, that begins, Tuesday, June 6th, at 7:05pm.
