Fremont, Nebraska- The Fremont Moo opened the second half of the Independence League Baseball schedule by suffering a 10-5 loss at the hands of the Nebraska Prospects, Tuesday night at Historic Moller Field.


The Prospects opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. Jackson Trout reached on a throwing error by Fremont's Blake Tablazon at shortstop. Two batters later, Cade Lynam singled, then Tucker Bradley delivered an RBI single, scoring Trout, to make it 1-0. Three batters later, Colin Lynam singled, bringing home Cade Lynam, to make it 2-0, the Prospects.


In the fourth inning, the Prospects added four more runs. Danny Spongberg and Easton Swafford led off with back-to-back singles. With runners at the corners, Colin Lynam grounded out to second base, scoring Spongberg, to make it 3-0. Then, Cole Kitchens hit an RBI single, plating Swafford to push the score to 4-0. The next batter, Joel Benes, hit a 1-2 pitch off Moo starter Kai Taylor, over the left field fence, to put the Prospects up 6-0.


The Moo would get on the board in the bottom of the fifth, as the first four batters reached base. Henry Hayman led off with a double, before Sammy Contacos was hit by a pitch. Next, Tyler Hummel singled, to load up the bases. Then, Hunter Palmer delivered a 2-RBI single, scoring Hayman and Contacos, to make it 6-2.


The Prospects would get a run back in the top of the sixth. After a Cole Kitchens one-out walk, Benes reached on a fielder's choice. Then with two down, Jackson Trout singled. A wild pitch from Moo reliever Devin Fritzsch, put runners at second and third. Nathan Cunningham drew a walk, to load the bases. Next, Cade Lynam hit an RBI single, plating Benes, to make it 7-2.


Fremont added two more in the bottom of the sixth. Andrew Kirchener struck out swinging against relief pitcher Cooper Tessendorf. However, a passed ball by Tucker Bradley allowed Kirchener to reach first. Two batters later, Sammy Contacos hit a double to left, to put runners at second and third. Next, Tyler Hummerl hit a ground ball to short, but Nathan Cunningham's throw was errant, allowing Kirchener and Contacos to both score, making it 7-4.


The Moo had a prime opportunity to cut into the deficit in the bottom of the seventh. Fremont loaded the bases with nobody out, however Prospects relief pitcher Sam Wragge recorded a popout, sandwiched between two strikeouts, to end the inning.


The Prospects put the game out of reach in the top of the eighth. Benes and pinch-hitter Kaden Young led off with back-to-back singles. Fremont went to the bullpen and brought in Braden Sweet. Cunningham laid down a sacrifice bunt to get Benes and Young to second and third with one out. Cade Lynam drew a walk to load up the bases. Then, new catcher Jackson Meier hit a 2-RBI single, scoring Benes and Young to make it 9-4. Then, Cade Lynam would score on a wild pitch, to put the Prospects up 10-4.


Fremont added one run in the bottom of the eighth. Tyler Hummel led off with a single. Two batters later, Blake Tablazon singled to put runners at first and second. Next, Ben Swails drew a walk to load the bases. Then, Josh Blount reached on a fielder's choice, which brought home Hummel, to make it 10-5.


In the bottom of the ninth, the Prospects brought in Braden Cannon. He struck out Kirchener looking for the first out. Hayman was hit by a pitch to give Fremont a base runner. However, Cannon got pinch-hitter Christian Hobbs to fly out to left and struck out Hummel swinging on a 1-2 pitch, to end the game.


P.J. Louks (5-0) earned the win for the Prospects. He pitched 5.0 innings, giving up four hits, two runs, walked one, struck out six, had one wild pitch and hit one batter. Cooper Tessendorf pitched 1.0 inning, giving up three hits, two unearned runs, and struck out two. Sam Wragge pitched 2.0 innings, giving up two hits, one run, walked one and struck out three. Braden Cannon pitched 1.0 inning, striking out two and hitting one batter.


Fremont's Kai Taylor (0-1) took the loss. The Tucson, Arizona native at Augustana University, pitched 4.0 innings, gave up eight hits, four earned runs, walked one, struck out seven and yielded the home run to Joel Benes. Devin Fritzsch pitched 3.0 innings. The Elkhorn native at Washburn University gave up five hits, three runs, walked two and struck out two. Braden Sweet pitched 2.0 innings. The Omaha native at Iowa Western Community College gave up one hit, walked two and struck out four.


Offensively, the Prospects' Colin Lynam was 2-for-6 with an RBI. Cole Kitchens was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Joel Benes was 2-for-6 with a two-run home run. Cade Lynam was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jackson Meier was 1-for-1 with two RBI's.


For Fremont, Ben Swails, the Tiffin, Iowa native at the University of Iowa, was 2-for-4. Josh Blount, the DePere, Wisconsin native at Iowa Central Community College, was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Tyler Hummel, the Nolensville, Tennessee native at Colorado School of the Mines was 2-for-5.


More Information: Fremont dropped its second straight game. With Christian Hobbs' flyout to left in the bottom of the ninth, his 11-game hit streak was snapped. 


Up Next: Fremont (17-8, 0-1) will host the Nebraska Prospects (15-3, 1-0) in game two of the three game series, Wednesday night at 7:05. Wednesday's game theme is "Winning Wednesday".
