Fremont, Nebraska- The Spearfish Sasquatch jumped out to a 6-0 lead and held on to defeat Fremont, 7-5, Saturday night at Historic Moller Field.
Spearfish began the scoring in the top of the third. Keegan Weston was hit by a pitch from Moo starter Carson Jasa. Weston then advanced all the way home on three Jasa wild pitches, to make it 1-0.
The Sasquatch's biggest inning was the fourth. Spearfish sent nine batters to the plate and scored five runs. Gage Kracht led off with a single and advanced to second and third on two more wild pitches. Jack Sutton drew a walk and Weston hit an RBI single, scoring Kracht, to make it 2-0. Seth Nelson followed with an RBI double, scoring Sutton, to make it 3-0. A wild pitch scored Weston, to make it 4-0. Joey Legg grounded out to short, scoring Nelson, to make it 5-0. Jack Nehler singled and a wild pitch advanced him to second. Bryson Hoier hit an RBI single, scoring Nehler, to make it 6-0.
Fremont got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Christian Hobbs led off with a double off Spearfish starter Noah McCandless. Henry Hayman singled to put runners at first and third. Hayman stole second, then Andrew Kirchner hit a two-RBI single, scoring Hobbs and Hayman to make it 6-2.
The Moo cut into the deficit in the sixth. Hunter Palmer hit a 3-2 pitch off McCandless, over the "Moller Monster" for his first home run of the year, making it 6-3.
Spearfish scored in the top of the eighth off Moo reliever Lucas Hamzeh. Weston drew a walk and Seth Nelson singled to put runners at first and third. A wild pitch brought home Weston, to make it 7-3.
Fremont cut the Sasquatch lead in half in the bottom of the eighth. Christian Hobbs led off the inning with a single off Spearfish reliever Zach Romans. Henry Hayman doubled to put runners at second and third. Then, Andrew Kirchner hit another two-RBI single, plating Hobbs and Hayman to make it 7-5. However, Romans retired the next three batters, to get out of the inning.
Hamzeh kept Spearfish from scoring in the top of the ninth and Fremont had a chance in the last of the ninth. However, Romans got Tyler Hummel to ground out to second and induced groundouts by Easton Steck and Hunter Palmer to shortstop to end the game.
Spearfish starter Noah McCandless (5-4) earned the win. He pitched 5.1 innings, giving up ten hits, three runs, walked one, struck out nine, gave up the solo home run to Palmer and had one wild pitch. Zach Romans (1) earned the save. He pitched 3.2 innings, giving up six hits, two runs and struck out two.
Fremont starter Carson Jasa (1-3) took the loss. The Arvada, Colorado native headed to the University of Nebraska pitched 3.2 innings. He gave up five hits, five runs, walked six, struck out five, had seven wild pitches and hit one batter. Devin Fritzsch pitched 31. innings. The Elkhorn native at Washburn University gave up one hit and struck out two. Lucas Hamzeh pitched 2.0 innings. The Gilbert, Arizona native at Midland University gave up two hits, one run, walked one and struck out two.
Offensively, Spearfish's Seth Nelson was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Joey Legg was 0-for-3, but drove in a run. Jack Nehler was 2-for-4. Bryson Hoier was 1-for-5 with a run batted in and Keegan Weston was 1-for-1 with an RBI.
Fremont's Christian Hobbs went 3-for-4. The Omaha native at Black Hawk Community College hit two singles and a double. Henry Hayman was 4-for-5. The Melbourne, Australia native via Barton County Community College had three singles and a double. Andrew Kirchner went 3-for-5. The Lakewood, California native at UNLV drove in four runs. Hunter Palmer was 1-for-5. The St. Michael, Minnesota native at South Dakota State hit his first home run of the season, in the sixth.
More Information: With the loss, Fremont had its five game win streak come to an end. With a single in the third inning, Henry Hayman ran his hit streak to six straight games. Spearfish evened the three game series at one game a piece.
Up Next: Fremont (27-19, 10-12) will host Spearfish (23-26, 12-12) in the rubber game of the series, Sunday afternoon. First pitch will be 4:05pm. Sunday is "Grease Night".
