Pierre, South Dakota- The Fremont Moo had a lead slip away for the third straight game and dropped a 2-1 decision to the Oahe Zap, Tuesday night at Hyde Stadium. Abel Anzaldua for Oahe and Landon Mueller for Fremont were very good in their respective starts, each giving their team at least six innings of solid starting pitching.
Fremont struck in the top of the first. Christian Hobbs led off the game with a walk, then was forced out at second on Ben Swails grounder to short. Swails then stole second and two batters later, Tyman Long hit an RBI double to the left field fence, scoring Swails, putting Fremont up, 1-0.
The score stood that way until the bottom of the seventh. After Landon Mueller worked six strong innings, Kadyn Van Hill came on in relief. With two outs, Tyler Traphagen and Trevor Seagraves drew back-to-back walks. Then Jackson Mix singled to left. With Traphagen rounding third, Henry Hayman charged the ball in left field with the intent to throw home for a potential play at the plate. However, Hayman had the ball slip under his glove and rolled to deep left field, allowing Traphagen and Seagraves to score, putting the Zap up, 2-1.
Fremont threatened to score in the top of the eighth, loading the bases. However, for the second time on the night, the Moo stranded the bases loaded, as relief pitcher John Patty got Blake Tablazon to strike out looking to end the inning.
Van HIll worked the bottom of the eighth and stranded a pair of Zap baserunners, which set up the drama in the ninth.
Oahe went to reliever Micah Larsen. The right-hander closed out the win Monday night in a non-save situation. Tuesday, Larsen shut the door on the Moo, to earn the save, however it did not come without a Moo fight. Christian Hobbs led off the inning grounding to short, but beat out the throw to reach on an infield single. Neil Jansen then came on to pinch run. Ben Swails laid down a bunt, but beat out the throw at first to give Fremont runners at first and second with no outs. Tyler Harrington laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance runners to second and third with one out in the inning. Tyman Long came to the plate with a chance to tie the game or give Fremont the lead with a hit. However, Larsen got Long to pop up to short on a 1-1 pitch for the second out. Then, Larsen got Jayson Willers to swing at a 1-2 pitch and ground out to Jackson Mix at second base for the final out of the game.
Oahe starter Abel Anzaldua (1-4) earned the win. He pitched 7.0 innings, giving up four hits, one run, walked three, struck out four and had one wild pitch. John Patty pitched the eighth inning, walking two, striking out one and hitting one batter. Micah Larsen (1) earned the save. He pitched the ninth and worked around a pair of infield singles.
Fremont starter Landon Mueller pitched 6.0 innings. The Fremont native at Southeast Community College gave up one hit, walked two, struck out seven, had two wild pitches and hit one batter. Kadyn Van Hill (1-2) suffered the loss. The Omaha native at Iowa Western Community College pitched 2.0 innings, giving up two hits, one earned run, walked two and hit one batter.
