Hastings, Nebraska- The Fremont Moo opened up a two-city, three-game series with the Hastings Sodbusters, Monday night, and held on for a 6-5 victory.
The Moo got on the board in the top of the second inning. Jason Willers led off with a single. Henry Hayman and Neil Jansen were both hit by a pitch to load up the bases. Andrew Kirchener hit an RBI single, scoring Willers, to make it 1-0. Blake Tablazon grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, scoring Hayman to make it 2-0, the Moo.
In the top of the fourth, Fremont added three runs. Willers led off with a walk, then, Hayman singled and Jansen smacked an RBI double to left, scoring Willers, to make it 3-0. Kirchener drew a walk, thenTablazon hit an RBI single, scoring Hayman to make it 4-0. Easton Steck recorded his first hit as a member of the Moo with an RBI single to left, scoring Jansen, to make it 5-0, Fremont.
Hastings got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. After Moo starter Kai Taylor retired the first ten batters he faced, Kale Jensen drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Zach Vetal reached on a throwing error by Tyler Hummel at third base, and Jensen scored, to make it 5-1.
In the fifth, Landon Gaz led off with a double. Next, Rusty Wortman hit a chopper back to Taylor on the mound, he got Gaz in a rundown, but his throw to third sailed over Hummel's head, allowing Gaz to round third and score, making it 5-2. Two batters later, Layne Shiers walked, then Kyle Hiltbrand did the same, loading the bases. Then, Anthony Chavez hit a two RBI single, scoring Wortman and Shiers, making it 5-4.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Sodbusters tied the game. Against Moo reliever Devin Fritzsch, Josh Prinner led off with a single, then stole second base. Layne Shiers hit a high one-hopper to first that Kirchener ranged to his right to field. However, Fritzsch was late getting to the bag to cover and Kirchener's throw bounced away, allowing Prinner to score, tying the game at five-all.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Sodbusters threatened to take the lead. With one out, Nick Jones singled off Fritzsch. Fremont went to the bullpen and brought in Carson Vasa. Ty Mattson entered the game and pinch ran for Jones at first base. Vasa attempted a pickoff throw to first, but bounced it short and it got by Kirchener, allowing Mattson to advance to second. However, Vasa struck out Gaz, looking and Wortman, swinging, to end the inning.
The Moo manufactured a run in the top of the ninth, to take the lead. After Sodbuster reliever Nolan Oliver had retired thirteen straight Moo batters, Kirchener delivered a one-out single. Two batters later, Easton Steck singled to left, to put runners at second and third. Then, on an 0-1 pitch, Tyler Hummel hit a single between Sodbuster first baseman Landon Gaz and the first base bag, down the line into right field, scoring Kirchener to put Fremont up 6-5.
In the bottom of the ninth, Vasa struck out Prinner looking, then got Shiers to ground out to second base, for the second out. Kyle Hiltbrand singled to center to bring the winning run to the plate. Hiltbrand advanced to second on a wild pitch and Jensen drew a walk to put the winning runs on base. However, Vasa got Anthony Chavez to strike out swinging on a 2-2 fastball to end the game.
Fremont starter Kai Taylor, the Tucson, Arizona native at Augustana University, pitched 5.0 innings, giving up two hits, one earned run, walked three, struck out six and had one wild pitch. Devin Fritzsch pitched 2.1 innings. The Elkhorn native at Washburn University, gave up three hits, one unearned run and struck out three. Carson Jasa (1-0) earned the win. The Arvada, Colorado native, headed to the University of Nebraska pitched 1.2 innings, giving up one hit, struck out four and had one wild pitch.
Hastings starter Luke Wenzel pitched 4.0 innings. He gave up six hits, five runs, walked two, struck out two and hit three batters. Nolan Oliver (0-1) took the loss. He pitched 4.2 innings, giving up three hits, one run, walked one and struck out five. Jacob Shaw pitched 0.1 innings, getting Tyman Long to foul out down the right field line, to end the top of the ninth.
Offensively, Fremont's Tyler Hummel was 1-for-2. The Nolensville, Tennessee native at Colorado School of the Mines delivered the eventual game winning RBI single, in the top of the ninth. Neil Jansen was 1-for-3. The Cypress, California native at San Jose State had an RBI double. Andrew Kirchener was 2-for-3. The Lakewood, California native at UNLV drove in one run. Blake Tablazon was 1-for-4. The Lynewoon, Washington native at Cerro Coso Community College drove in two runs. Easton Steck went 2-for-4. The Galesburg, Illinois native at University of Illinois-Springfield had one RBI.
More Information: The Moo snapped its two-game losing streak, with the victory. Also, Fremont stretched its season mark over Hastings to 7-0 on the season.
Up Next: Fremont (19-12, 2-5) will play at Hastings (7-23, 1-4) Tuesday night at Duncan Field. First pitch is 4pm.
